Movie Review- The Fault in our Stars, Corpse Bride, The Boxtrolls (10/29/14)

I had prepared myself not to cry when I put my first movie in for the week, and I am willing to admit that I failed miserably. I cried when I read the book and when I saw ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ at the Redbox I knew that I couldn’t say no.

The book made me cry like a baby, but it was one of the most amazing pieces of literature that I had read in a long time! And this is one book-to-movie story that you can take on in any order and still be just as pleased with the outcome. Directed by Josh Boone this romance will sweep you off your feet making you fall in love with these characters. Following the life of two different teens who are both battling different cancer conditions this movie is heartbreakingly beautiful.

Starring Shaliene Woodley and Ansel Elgort this bittersweet story will have you wishing there was more! As a book lover myself I was a little skeptical as to how it would add up when it came to the writing, but I have to say that I was so impressed that I watched it twice in one night, and cried twice in one night.

With a very confident 9 out of 10 I know that this would make for a great night in. My only disclaimers being that with a movie like this there are some very graphic moments that come with the situations that the characters are in and as a parent I would recommend watching it first. It won’t make the second time easier but you will see what you are in for!

My second pick this week came with the notion that everyone loves a good Tim Burton film. The animated ‘Corpse Bride’ came out in 2005 and is another great choice for this time of the year.

I found myself caught in a marathon of Burton films with some of the girls on my hall when we needed a study break and something that came with most of them, that was my favorite part, was the voice of Johnny Depp. Along with Helena Bonham Carter this movie will have something that is recognizable for almost anyone.

There is a bit of a dark twist, but nothing that would be too much for a young audience. With a 7 out of 10 I think that this would be a fun Halloween movie for the whole family to enjoy.

My last pick this week was probably my most interesting one of all. I hadn’t even heard of ‘The Boxtrolls’ or watched an advertisement for them until one of my friends who happened to be an education major mentioned it to me. It’s based on the children’s novel ‘Here Be Monsters’ by Alan Snow and she was reading it for one of her lesson plans when she convinced me to go see it with her.

At the beginning I was struggling to enjoy it, but once the movie started and I was able to some what connect with the plot I found it to be a sweet movie. The plot follows the story of a young boy who was raised by the ‘Boxtrolls’ underneath the streets of a city. The only recognizable voices for me were ‘Winnie’ voiced by Elle Fanning and ‘Archibald Snatcher’ voiced by Ben Kingsley.

In the end I didn’t feel like it was worth the movie that I spent at the theater as a 20 year old. But if I had younger children that had expressed interest it would be a fun movie for them even though waiting just a few more weeks would mean that you could save so much by renting it from a Redbox.

Giving this movie a 6 out of 10 I believe that the best results will come if you take the time to watch the clips and trailers online before heading out to the movies.

Movie Review- Maze Runner, Grown Ups, Divergant (10/1/14)

This week I went a little crazy discovering the page to screen adaptions that have taken over our entertainment. Though most of you will always think that the book will forever be the better version that doesn’t mean that these aren’t worth it.

Opening night for the ‘Maze Runner’ I was packed into the Rave in Little Rock with my swim team and about 200 others sitting on the edge of my seat.

Based on the novel by James Dashner this film was directed by Wes Ball along with an incredible almost all male cast this made for a very suspenseful night out. Don’t worry, for those of you that have read the book, Dylan O’Brien plays a great ‘Thomas’ with Kaya Scodelario by his side as ‘Teresa’.

It will give you a hunger games feel as you settle into the film and you will have moments that your hands will not be able to grip tight enough to the armrest. And the best part will come when you get to the end and it leaves you begging for more. That is always my favorite part of the movies.

With a PG-13 rating this film does have some disturbing elements and violent images throughout that come with setting of the film. If you are in the mood for a great Sci-Fi mystery movie with an 8 out of 10 then this will make for a great night out.

But for a night in I have one that would be great for the whole family.  A few weeks ago I reviewed ‘Grown Ups 2’ but this week I found some good laughs and a fun time with friends while we watched ‘Grown Ups’.

This one is a little more family friendly then the second one even though there are still moments that I would be cautious when the younger generation may be involved.  With an all-star cast they carry the story of a group of high school friends that come back together for a 4th of July weekend with their whole families.

Directed by Dennis Dugan, you might recognize him by his work with ‘Happy Gilmore’, ‘Grown Ups 2’, and ‘Big Daddy’.  With writers Fred Wolf and Adam Sandler they paired to create one of the most humorous scripts and with the help of Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade there is no shortage of laughs. With a 6.8 out of 10 this is one to watch on one of those rainy afternoons curled up on the couch and at just $5 this one is worth it.

This week’s Redbox came at a good time for me. After a week of test and lectures I wanted something that could take me away and get my mind off the stresses that it had to endure.

‘Divergent’ came out this past year and I heard so many great things about it but I will admit that I never took the time to see it in theaters and I wish I had. But not to worry, it’s now in a more budget friendly format.

Based on the novel by Veronica Roth this movie boast an A-list cast including Shaliene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet. Woodley blew me away on screen chemistry with her co-stars that made me feel like I wasn’t watching a movie but following her as she went through these experiences. Though I will say that I recommend taking the time to read the novel before watching the movie because there may be too many unanswered questions that arise that may turn some people away from enjoying the movie.

If you had children that could handle the ‘Hunger Games’ then I don’t see a reason for this to be a movie that they can’t be open to seeing.  So with a 9 out of 10 I think a Redbox movie might be the perfect start to a great weekend.
